In modern usage, a 'ceilidh' is a traditional Gaelic gathering involving folk music and dancing. In England, what is now called a 'ceilidh' is much like a barn-dance, but with a bit more energy! The dances at ceilidhs and barn-dances have their origins across Europe – whilst hornpipes originated in 17th century England, the Polka originated in Bohemia in the middle of the 19th century, the waltz is from Vienna, and other dances such as bourees and mazurkas are gaining in popularity. What could be more natural than using music from across Europe for these dances? In recent times the traditional English dance music has been influenced by modern musical forms, including ska, reggae, swing, rock, and trance, and there have been bands with a traditional French influence. Now there is pan-European music! Lebedek’s arrangements of both traditional and more contemporary dance music from Britain and across Eastern Europe have an innate 'danceability' and create a unique atmosphere, whether at a major festival, a village barn dance, or at a wedding reception.

At English ceilidhs and barn-dances, a 'caller' is used to guide the dancers through the evening, and to explain the dances. Simon Loake has a wealth of experience of calling dances at wedding receptions, village barn-dances, and ceilidhs at major festivals. He has a clear and concise calling style, which appeals to those who are new to this form of dancing as well as to the more experienced ceilidh-boppers. At festivals, Simon is adept at running workshops for those new to ceilidh dancing, and workshops for those who wish to become dance callers.
